Ecologistas en Accion (Environmentalists in Action) is an association made up of federations that are themselves made up of smaller groups. In total the group contains more than 200 environmental groups that in 1988 decided to unite under the same name. Each group is autonomous in its decisions and budgeting. If a person lives in Barcelona, for example, then they are a member of the Barcelona group, while someone in Madrid would be a member of the Madrid group. That is how it works at the group level, but there are structures to coordinate at the state level in order for the entire group to be coordinated. There are 3 people in charge of the coordination of coordinations, then we have a biweekly meeting space where the 3 coordination-coordinators meet with the coordinators of the three fields of work– these 3 fields of work are ocean, energy, and water. And every trimester, we have a meeting where these same people meet, in addition to the representatives of the territories. This is our coordination scheme.
This organization understands that environmental problems originate from an increasingly globalized model of production and consumption, and that it’s necessary to transform this model in order to avoid environmental crisis. In order to accomplish this, the organization carries out awareness campaigns, as well as public and legal complaints against actions that damage the environment. At the same time, the group creates concrete and viable alternatives in each of the fields where it carries out it activities. All of the work carried out by the organization is based principally in the voluntary group work of its members, activists, collaborators, sympathizers, and occasionally hired personnel. This manner of work is is nothing more than a reflection of the way we understand the world, in which there is a place for there to be multiple ways of doing things and to be organized from a place of diversity, respect, horizontality, and coherence.
