University: University of Michigan
Location: Michigan, USA
Courses: Spanish 313 titled “Contemporary Issues in Spain”

In this course, interviews from the Constellation of the Commons are used, both orally and in written form. The purpose is to use the material to unveil the main issues affecting Spanish society in the 21st century (economic crisis, political corruption, economic inequality, unemployment, immigration and emigration, the 15M movement and social movements, climate change, gender violence, women’s rights and LGBTQ+ rights, gentrification, legal social centers and squats, Catalan independence, historical memory, and finally, the monarchy versus the Republic).

This material serves perfectly to diagnose the origin of these problems and articulate possible solutions to these issues. In short, the struggles, demands, and achievements of cooperatives and common people, along with cultural products, form the platform for elaborating a political, economic, cultural, and social radiography of our society and proposing alternatives to the current system.

The Constellation of the Commons virtually visited this class to explain the project’s philosophy.
