Minimum wage is one of the big advances of European welfare states achieved throughout the 20th century. On one hand, it offers a guarantee to workers by ensuring a minimum income while working and on the other hand it offers a stabilizing element for the market, since it makes a series of expenses foreseeable for the employer and provides consumers-or some of them-with an income that they can use to acquire goods and services.
